Transportation has a major impact on air quality in Romanian cities, and decarbonizing it is one of the main solutions. In 2023, we set a partnership between Ivelo and the air monitoring platform, Aerlive, to increase awareness of air quality in Bucharest and the impact we can have on it by using sustainable means of transportation.
We monitored air quality at 10 IVelo stations, and users could find out about air quality in their area directly from the IVelo app.
What did we find out?
All 10 monitoring stations recorded a level of PM2.5 pollution that exceeds the annual average allowed by law, and two of them recorded PM10 exceedances.
The Old Town is the station with the highest level of PM2.5 and PM10 pollution, followed by the station on Barbu Văcărescu and the one on Libertății Boulevard.
The time interval from 4 PM to 8 PM is the most polluted period of the day with PM2.5, as well as with PM10.
